Domain name (domain) is a symbolic (alphanumeric) designation formed in accordance with the international rules of Internet addressing, intended for a named address to the Internet resource of a domain administrator (client) and corresponding to a specific network address.

Domain registration is the record into the register of the national domain zone of the information necessary to ensure the functioning of the domain.

National domain zone – a hierarchical segment of the Internet consisting of a set of software and hardware complexes that ensure the functioning of the first (top) level domains «.by» and «.bel».

Recommendations for domain name

A domain name in the «.by» domain zone must contain at least two and no more than sixty-three letters of the Latin alphabet, numbers, characters «hyphen» («-«), must not begin, end with the character «hyphen» («-»), and also contain a hyphen («-») in the third and fourth positions at the same time.

A domain name in the «.bel» domain zone is formulated using letters of the Belarusian or Russian alphabet, numbers, characters «hyphen» («-») and «apostrophe» («’») which when translated into Latin transliteration contains not less than two and not more than sixty-three letters, numbers, characters, and must not begin or end with the characters «hyphen» («-») and (or) "apostrophe" («’»).

Domain names containing words or phrases that do not meet generally accepted moral and ethical standards, incite the ethnic hatred, promote violence, cruelty and other acts prohibited by the legislation of the Republic of Belarus are not subject to registration.

When choosing a domain name the applicant-client should avoid names that are identical or similar to the extent of confusion with the names of the registered means of individualization of the civil circulation’s participants, goods, works or services, if the applicant is not the owner of the right to a company’s name, not the owner of a trademark and service mark, not a person having the right to use the geographical indication.
